Vascular catheterization of rodents is a procedure widely used in various areas of biomedical research, especially toxicology to allow repeated or constant intravenous administration of compounds and/or collection of multiple blood and lymph fluid samples. It is also useful for the measurements of blood pressure. This webinar is designed for beginners and is intended as an introduction to rodent catheterization. It will include a review of gross anatomy, catheterization materials and basic catheterization principles and techniques. During this webinar, participants will have the opportunity to observe jugular vein, carotid artery, femoral vein and artery catheterization, including the proper selection, usage and handling of applicable surgical instruments and equipment.  By the end of this webinar participants will be better able to plan and perform research experiments with their own rodent models using these techniques.

Who Should Attend?

This interactive webinar is designed for individuals responsible for:

  1. Preparing rodents for vascular catheterization surgeries.
  2. Performing or assisting in rodent catheterization surgical procedures.
  3. Performing rodent peri-operative vascular catheterization care.

What will be covered?

This webinar will cover the following topics:

  1. Vascular catheterization selection and preparation
  2. Animal considerations
  3. Preoperative preparation
  4. Required equipment and materials
  5. Patient preparation
  6. Anesthesia and analgesia
  7. Anatomy review
  8. Surgical procedures demonstrated in mice and rats
    1. Jugular vein catheterization
