Technicians and research associates are often trained in peri-operative and surgical techniques without being given the background information to allow them to problem solve on their own. The intent of this fourteen part course is to provide the fundamentals of research surgery, from regulations to surgical technique, to allow technicians and research associates to better trouble shoot problems, develop high quality procedures, and generate better data while providing more humane care to their research subjects. Using short quizzes, review sessions, and a final comprehensive examination of learned material we will assess the individual students progress and provide feedback and guidance as the course progresses. This will include informal review sessions as well as structured lectures. Topics will include anesthesia, analgesia, monitoring, aseptic technique, basic surgical technique, post-operative care and assessments, and closure methods.
